Snowboarding at Soda Springs
Taking a break at the moment in Truckee, Lake Tahoe CA, went snowboarding at Soda Springs resort for the first time the other day. That’s what I call hard work, as a learner, strapping on a big board and walking that thing through the snow can be very physically demanding especially on your legs.
I lost count of how many times I fell over during the training, now I understand the first thing you learn is how to fall, both forward and backward crunched in a ball trying not to leave your fingers out to break the fall. The next thing to learn is the turns, heel turn for left and toe turn for right.
I found it frustrating as I kept using my whole body in the momentum which is a no no, hence my butt kept on hitting the snow. When trying the turns only just raising your arm and pointing in the direction of the turn with your head also pointed in that direction followed by the knee flexing down and then applying either heel or toe motion.
After what seemed like 5 hours of training , was in fact only just under 1, we were taught how to get in the ski lift sans snowboard which the thought of was scary if you screwed it up. Then get to the top of the ski hill and snowboard down it. This is when the other foot had to get strapped onto the board, which I needed help as cramp was starting to creep into my thigh.
Eventhough this was the slow hill it still looked daunting, and I doubt “slow” was relevant I seen people zooming down. Anyway once both feet were strapped in down I went, falling over every 5 metres, falling was ok, getting back on the board was harder! I didn’t think I would get to the bottom which now seemed a million miles away. Eventually I crashed my way down, being whipped by a 7 and 9 year old, I didn’t care as now I was safe at the bottom. And what a relief to unstrap myself from that board and get myself out of Soda Springs.
Would I go again, Yes I would ! – Great fun, I think it was one of the coolest things on the planet for a guy to do.
